Description
Product Overview Temazepam 20 mg is a prescription medication belonging to the benzodiazepine class. It acts as a hypnotic (sleep-inducing) agent and is primarily used for the short-term treatment of severe insomnia (difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep) that is disabling or causing extreme distress, when non-drug treatments have failed. Temazepam helps calm the brain by enhancing the effects of a natural chemical called GABA, promoting sleep onset and maintenance.
Important Warning This medicine is intended for short-term use only (typically 7–10 days, maximum 2–4 weeks including tapering). Prolonged use can lead to tolerance, physical and psychological dependence, and withdrawal symptoms. It is a controlled substance with potential for abuse and addiction. Always follow your doctor’s instructions precisely and do not share with others.
Dosage and Administration
- Adults (for insomnia): Usual dose is 10–20 mg taken orally 30 minutes before bedtime. 20 mg is commonly used but start with lower doses if possible.
- Elderly or debilitated patients: Lower dose recommended (e.g., 5–10 mg; maximum 20 mg) due to increased sensitivity and risk of prolonged effects, falls, and confusion.
- Take on an empty stomach for faster onset, but ensure you can have a full 7–8 hours of sleep to avoid next-day drowsiness.
- Do not stop suddenly—taper off gradually under medical supervision to prevent rebound insomnia or withdrawal.
Common Side Effects
- Daytime drowsiness, dizziness, or “hangover” feeling
- Headache, fatigue, or muscle weakness
- Dry mouth, nausea, or confusion
- Memory impairment or unusual dreams
Serious side effects (seek immediate medical help): Severe breathing difficulties, unusual behavior (e.g., aggression, hallucinations), complex sleep behaviors (e.g., sleep-walking, sleep-eating), depression, or signs of allergic reaction (rash, swelling).
Precautions and Contraindications
- Do not use if you have: Known hypersensitivity to benzodiazepines, severe respiratory insufficiency, sleep apnea syndrome, severe liver impairment, myasthenia gravis, acute narrow-angle glaucoma, or history of drug/alcohol dependence.
- Avoid alcohol and other CNS depressants (e.g., opioids, sedatives)—can cause life-threatening respiratory depression.
- Not recommended during pregnancy (risk of fetal harm) or breastfeeding (passes into breast milk).
- May impair driving or operating machinery the next day—do not drive if affected.
- Use extreme caution in elderly patients due to increased risk of falls, hip fractures, confusion, and prolonged effects.
Storage Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
