Product Overview Diazepam 5 mg is a prescription medication belonging to the benzodiazepine class. It has anxiolytic (anti-anxiety), sedative, muscle relaxant, anticonvulsant, and amnestic properties. It is primarily used for the short-term relief of severe anxiety, management of acute alcohol withdrawal, muscle spasms, adjunctive treatment in certain seizure disorders, and as a premedication before surgical or diagnostic procedures. Diazepam works by enhancing the effects of a natural chemical called GABA in the brain, producing a calming effect.

Important Warning This medicine is intended for short-term use only (typically 2–4 weeks for anxiety, longer only under strict supervision). Prolonged use can lead to tolerance, physical and psychological dependence, and withdrawal symptoms. It is a controlled substance with potential for abuse and addiction. Concomitant use with opioids or alcohol can cause profound sedation, respiratory depression, coma, or death. Always follow your doctor’s instructions precisely.

Dosage and Administration

• Adults (for anxiety): 2–10 mg, 2–4 times daily (total daily dose usually 5–30 mg in divided doses).
• Muscle spasm or alcohol withdrawal: 5–10 mg, 3–4 times daily as needed.
• For sedation/premedication: 5–10 mg as a single dose.
• Elderly or debilitated patients: Start with lower doses (e.g., 2–2.5 mg once or twice daily) and increase gradually; higher sensitivity to side effects.
• Take with or without food.
• Do not stop suddenly—taper off gradually under medical supervision to prevent rebound anxiety, seizures, or withdrawal symptoms.

Common Side Effects

• Drowsiness, fatigue, or sedation
• Dizziness, muscle weakness, or ataxia (unsteadiness)
• Confusion, headache, or blurred vision
• Dry mouth or memory impairment

Serious side effects (seek immediate medical help): Severe respiratory depression, unusual behavior changes (e.g., aggression, hallucinations), depression, suicidal thoughts, or signs of allergic reaction (rash, swelling).

Precautions and Contraindications

• Do not use if you have: Known hypersensitivity to benzodiazepines, acute narrow-angle glaucoma, severe respiratory insufficiency, severe liver impairment, sleep apnea syndrome, myasthenia gravis, or history of drug/alcohol dependence.
• Avoid alcohol and other CNS depressants (e.g., opioids, sedatives)—can cause life-threatening respiratory depression.
• Not recommended during pregnancy (risk of fetal harm, including floppy infant syndrome) or breastfeeding (passes into breast milk).
• May impair driving or operating machinery—do not drive if affected.
• Use extreme caution in elderly patients due to increased risk of falls, confusion, cognitive impairment, and fractures.
